Chapter Eleven

Ginger Madison lived in a white shingle style home in an old neighborhood, the kind of area where people thought little of property value. Though nice, it didn’t have the character of Polly’s Queen Anne. Classical black columns accented a wraparound porch. There was less detailing around the windows and doors than other houses built in the same time period, but it did have an irregular roof line with intersecting cross gables that made it visually appealing to look at. The first story was made of stone while shingles covering the second story. The most striking feature was the Palladian windows. At two stories, it towered slightly over its ranch style neighbors.

Houses along the street had been built sporadically over the decades so that a bright purple, grand Victorian sat next to a prefab two story box, next to a split-level ranch home, next to the Madison home. The yards were left in various states of care and neglect. Incomplete wooden fences lined a yard, not really keeping anything out or in. One family had a fake water well with a hanging bucket, surrounded by flowers. The house next to it had what looked to be some kind of car part poking out of a jungle of overgrown grass.

Jackson observed all these things like a writer preparing a story, making mental notes of his impressions for later. It was an old habit. Anna wasn’t really talking as she stared at the photograph of George, waiting for it to give her another clue.

“Anything else happen?” he asked, more as a way to engage her in conversation.

“Not yet. I’m trying to figure out what it’s telling me. George is sad, a woman’s hip, unmasked face, masked face...” She sighed heavily. “I’m worried if I look away, I might miss a clue, but at the same time I’m making myself blurry-eyed by staring at it.”

Jackson parked the car along the curb in front of the Madison house. He wanted to reach over and grab Anna’s hand in his. All her talk about spells didn’t frighten him. The memory of her kiss lingered, but it was more than desire that clouded his emotions. She captivated him, completely.

Jackson wanted to make her realize that the feelings he was developing for her weren't just a trick of the mind. He liked her, a lot. Maybe even more than that. It had been a long time since a woman occupied his thoughts. When he was with Nicole, he’d been convinced he loved her, but it had never been this overwhelming and intense. One thing was clear, Anna was not Nicole. When he first saw her, he remembered thinking she was a work-a-holic and worried that meant she’d put her job over all else. That wasn’t the case at all. Anna was busy, yes, but she seemed to put everyone else first—her aunt, the animals at the shelter, people in town who needed a little extra help. And she did it all without bragging, and without complaint.

Jackson thought about Anna all the time.
